ABCs of Cucurbit Fungicide Strategies 2008 (Nos. refer to different fungicide groups [color coded], with different modes of action)

http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu

T. A. Zitter 3-7-08

A.  Powdery Mildew (occurs every year)

Beginning when lesions are 1st detected, and the PM sprays should include:

13Quintec (only currently registered on muskmelon, spec. melons and watermelon); begin usage early in the PM cycle and see below).

Use the following in an alternating program:

·         M2Sulfur (good protectant, alone or tank-mixed with below)

3Nova Hi rate + M5Bravo (or OLP) or

          3Procure Hi rate + M5Br (or OLP)

           or alternated with

          11 + 7 Pristine or

11Cabrio, Flint, and Sovran (must tank mix with a protectant because of PM res.; do not use Quadris or Amistar for PM control alone) or

Other protectants to be used with two other PM effective products include JMS Stylet mineral oil, coppers etc.)

B.  Most seasons when moisture is adequate after fruit set (end July, beginning Aug), and if rotation of less than 2 years is practiced then --

Gummy Stem Blight/Black rot sprays should include:

          M5Bravo (or OLP) Alt with

11Amistar, Quadris, Ouadris Opti (1X because of PM res), Sovran or

          11 + 7Pristine or

1Topsin M (OLP) + M5Bravo (or OLP) (1X because of GSB or PM res)

C.  If Plectosporium has previously been found in Zucchini Squash or Pumpkins, and less than 2 year rotation is practiced, and if July-August rains occur (wet soils) then Plectosporium sprays (for these crops only) should include:

M5Bravo (OLP) or M3 maneb or

M3mancozeb (not Pumpkin or Winter Squash) Alt. with

11Cabrio, Flint, Quadris or Amistar (use only 1x  (1 spray because of PM, DM and GSB resistance)

D.  If Phytophthora has previously occurred on your farm (utilize disease management practices) or forecasts exist for Downy Mildew airborne from Michigan, Ontario, Pennsylvania or New Jersey --then

DM (DM)/Phytophthora (P) sprays should include:

*Five top DM choices, used preventatively: *28Previcur Flex (DM) + protect)

          *21Ranman (DM, P)

          *11+27Tanos (DM, P suppression + protect)

          *27Curzate (DM) + protectant

          *22+M3Gavel (not Pump or W. Squ)(DM, P)

           Alternate with40Acrobat (Forum)(DM,P) or

          11Reason (DM) or

33Phosphoric acids Agri-Fos, Fosphite, Fungi-Phite, ProPhyt, Kphite, Phostrol, Rampart, Topaz (DM, Phytophthora, Pythium) or

4+M5 Ridomil Gold Bravo (Resistance issue of mefenoxam for DM); coppers

F.       IF SCAB SHOULD BE AN ISSUE:

·    M5Bravo or OLP

·    M1 fixed coppers some are labeled

·    mancozeb (C, M, WM, SS, edible gourds)

·    Ridomil Gold Bravo

Key:

OLP = other labeled product

1X = one spray application

M = multi-site activity and mixing partner to reduce risk of developing fungicide resistance

Gold = Sulfurs; Violet = Group 11 strobilurins; Blue = phosphorous acid salt; Silver = chlorothalonil; Green = fixed coppers
