Comprehensive List of Copper Compounds for Use on Vegetables by Listed Diseases

T. A. Zitter
Department of Plant Pathology
Cornell University
Ithaca, NY 14853
Issued July 2007

As a follow-up to the discussion on the use of copper compounds for the control of vegetable diseases, the Table below lists the registered copper products and the specific diseases labeled by crop.  Abbreviations are used in the table to list the common names of diseases given on each label and the explanation of the abbreviation for common names followed by the scientific name is given in the final page footnotes.  A quick review of the table reveals that there can be major differences between the products and the diseases labeled by crops.  Language is also vague as to which diseases are actually meant, but reviewing all of the labels gives some clues.

For example, although basic copper sulfate (Albaugh and Old Bridge) have pretty broad labels across the crops listed, under crucifers they list leaf spots (LeafS) along with downy mildew (DM), leaving us to assume that the leaf spots they mean are for Bacterial black rot (Blkrot) and Alternaria black leaf spot (Alt LS), as these diseases are shown on all other labels.  For cucurbits, 2ee labeling exists for some coppers in NYS for Phytophthora blight (PhyBlt) as indicated.  The basic copper sulfate labels for onion do not include bacterial blight for onion, but most of the other labels do.  Perhaps it is good for the onion crop (and for growers) that the bacterial blights are not specified, since at least 4 different bacterial diseases can infect onion, and bacterial diseases are not easily identified without laboratory isolations.  The straight copper products are all labeled for TEP, = Tomato, Eggplant and Pepper.  In the table, only the diseases for tomato = T are listed (because of space limitations), but in the footnote the diseases are covered for eggplant and pepper.  Another clarification for tomato is for leaf mold caused by Fulvia fulva.  This appears on the labels as either leaf mold (LefMo) or gray leaf mold (GyLM).  A few labels will also list under tomato, Stemphylium leaf spot (StemLS), but we do not recognize this disease in the Northeast.  Finally, both Cuprofix MZ Disperss and ManKocide, consisting of both copper and mancozeb, have a more restricted crop usage label because of the addition of mancozeb.  In the case of Tomato they are registered, but they are not registered for use on eggplant or pepper.

Note:  The listed crops and diseases are as found on the most recent labels for the copper products.  Most are from the PIMS web site, however in a few cases I used the latest label found on the Crop Data Management System (CDMS) (http://www.cdms.net/LabelsMsds/LMDefault.aspx?ms=1,2,3,4) as of July 2007.  Even here confusion arises, since on the PIMS site, for example, the two Champion WP products from NuFarm and Agtrol (former company) are both registered, but do not include any leafy vegetables, including Spinach, on these labels (Spinach appears on the CDMS national label) (this confusion also exists for Champ 2F and Champ Dry Prills).  My advice is to carefully check the label before you purchase any product to make sure it clearly lists the crops and diseases for your intended use.
